The Roman conquest of the British Isle occurred in the C1st. Jet finds are common from a Roman context, but the romans were already well established jet craftsmen before they discovered the British source of the material. Pliny the Elder in his ‘Historia natralis’ tells us of a source of jet from modern day Turkey and we know that the Romans were exploiting Asturian jet from the north of Spain. A roman jet workshop was however discovered in Eboracum – modern day York. It dates from the C3rd and therefore makes us – The Ebor Jetworks, the original Whitby Jet manufacturers!
