Derbyshire Oakstone Oakstone is a dark brown, pseudo-stalactitic variety of barite that was first found at Arbor Low in 1832. Although now a rare stone it was much used for ornamental purposes in the 19th century, usually inlaid with other Derbyshire stones to make fine table tops. It features unusual and attractive brown/orange banded resembles at first glance wood and hence it became known as “Oakstone”. The barite takes a high polish, and when skillfully worked show ‘eyes’ formed from small concentric rings of contrasting coloured material.
