Whitby Jet first appears in the archaeological record around about 5500 years ago. The so-called ‘monster beads’ (due to their size) of the Early to Middle Neolithic, and in the belt sliders of the Middle Neolithic demonstrate an advanced level of craftsmanship. I have no metal drill-bit in my workshop today capable of drilling an 11cm bead. How these items were manufactured remains a mystery!
