Antique Whitby Jet Brooch “Faith”

A beautiful 19th century (1860 -1880) floral Whitby Jet brooch. Incorporating the language of floriography, a coded  language invented by the Victorians to convey secret messages by using images of  flowers and plants. Here  for instance, we have grapes carved out of the Whitby Jet.  The grapes were used to symbolise Christ.

This brooch measures approx 45mm x 40mm across its widest points and is approx 20mm in depth from the back to to highest point of the ornate carving. There is a slight ‘nibble’ (approx 5mm) on the  back outer edge of the pattern, which doesn’t really detract from the appearance and this is reflected in the price.
