Antique Whitby Jet Brooch “Faith and Devotion”

A beautiful 19th century (1860 -1880) floral Whitby Jet brooch. Incorporating the language of floriography, a coded  language invented by the Victorians to convey secret messages by using images of  flowers and plants. Here  for instance, we have grapes and leaves  carved out of the Whitby Jet.  The grapes along with leaves  were used to symbolise the christian faith.

This brooch is a perfect example of victorian jet working at its finest, with no damage. As good an example as we have ever had. It is quite large too, measuring approx’ 60mm x 50mm across its widest points and is approx’25mm in depth from the back to the highest point on the carving.
